Check In With Yourself Daily
Hello,
Like the last blog post, here is another thing that I haven’t been doing a great job at, but it is such a valuable tool, I think you should know about it.
I have daily and weekly reminders to check in with myself.
What the heck does that even mean?
As adults, we have our day to day things we must accomplish to keep the hamster wheel turning. Things like work, being a parent, navigating relationship with friends and/or our partners, running a household, etc.
Many of these may be “have to do’s” and maybe not always want to do’s. Am I right or am I right?!
What I really mean about checking in is the following. For those goals, aspirations, habit changes, big dreams that you have though about, written down and have made important enough to commit to, have you checked in on your own progress?
How are you doing on those things that set you apart, feed your need for growth and/or are important enough to you to set goals to accomplish them?
Without a determined time to check in with yourself and ask those questions, time just slips by with no care for your feelings.
Have you found yourself half way through the year and not accomplished any of the goals you set out for yourself at the beginning of the year?
That feeling kind of sucks.
Now imagine that you take 15 minutes at the end of the week to ask yourself the following questions. (Of course, this is on your calendar as a reminder so you don’t forget. ;)
What am I doing well right now?
What can I do to improve in _______ area of my life?
Am I on the right track?
Giving yourself the opportunity to revisit weekly and check in with yourself is so vital to consistent progress. I have not done a good job of this myself the last few months because focus was elsewhere, yet I still am feeling the strain of not catching myself off a predetermined and thought out course I committed to.
Yikes!
Remember, it doesn’t have to be pie in the sky stuff. It could be something as easy and important as drinking enough water each day. Asking yourself how you are doing on that task each day or each week is a much better method to catching yourself off course. Why wait until next year to realize you didn’t accomplish that simple task you gave yourself.
We are a busy, multitasking and distracted bunch of folks! (Multitasking is a myth by the way. Humans can’t really multitask. And no, breathing and walking at the same time doesn’t count. Actually, computers don’t do this either. They are very good at running single tasks quickly and being able to stop one, move on to another, and get back to the other one quickly.)
Checking in with yourself is a great practice to get right with your direction, mindset and life.
I am in the process of restarting this right now, and both bummed and happy that it has taken a few months to get here while focusing on other things. Those other things made this no less important, and quite frankly, needed to be asked all the time either way.
Big love to all of you!
P.S. Give yourself some love. You deserve it.
